Crafting bespoke aerial imagery for the new Sydney Fish Market

Earlier this year, we had the privilege of being part of something special— the documentation of one of Australia’s most anticipated architectural openings, the new Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay.

Danish architecture studio 3XN, working alongside BVN Architecture and landscape architects ASPECT Studios, had spent years bringing this landmark to life. With its striking undulating roof rippling like fish scales over the waterfront, it was always going to be a building that demanded to be seen from the air.

3XN reached out to us because they needed more than just a drone operator. The new Sydney Fish Market sits within restricted airspace, and capturing it properly required a team with the knowledge, licences, and operational experience to make it happen. That’s exactly what we brought to the table.

We worked closely with acclaimed architectural photographer Rasmus Hjortshøj, whose work has appeared in some of the world’s most respected design publications. Together, we planned and executed drone operations across multiple sessions at sunrise, through the day, and at sunset. Each lighting condition revealed something different about the building’s form and its relationship to the harbour and the city behind it.

Working in restricted airspace around Blackwattle Bay required careful coordination and precise execution, but that’s where our experience made the difference. Every flight was planned to give Rasmus exactly the angles and light he needed.
The images have since been published widely around the world, appearing in Wallpaper*, Dezeen, the RIBA Journal, Architecture Lab, Australian Traveller, and Stir World, among many others. Both 3XN and Rasmus were very pleased with what we were able to deliver, and seeing the work reach a global audience has been incredibly rewarding.

Projects like this are a reminder of why we do what we do. When great architecture, great photography, and the right operational expertise come together, the results speak for themselves.
